If you are about to choose your career for the first time or want to change your career direction, let me briefly introduce you to 12 ideas, which I explain in more detail a video you can find in the link below.
1- You won't be able to monetize all your passions:
And you don't really have to. Just because your passions don't feed you, don't give them up. Instead, try to reconciliate your present so that you can integrate your interest into it, and continue practicing what you love to do, at least for short periods a few times a week, for the rest of your life, that will give you a more colorful life.
2- In an age of artificial intelligence, make it your ally
The faster you incorporate AI into your career, the better for you. And you concentrate on doing what the robot can't do, I mean the most human part of your work, the one that has to do with human relationships, creativity, critical thinking, intuition, the artistic part of it.
3-Career is not the most important thing in your life
Life is about fitting career into your life, and not the other way around. As the years go by, you will realize that you are going to study several things, work in different places and do various tasks, and all of them will shape your career trajectory. Just go one step at a time.
4-Skills can be developed in life
And they are to be put at the service of others. The more you get out of your “little world”, and look for giving contributions for others needs, for humanity trascendental causes, the more you can develop your life skills. Vocation is not only about inner voices, but also about hearing the external voices in others needs, and what you can do for making this world a little better.
5- Be true to yourself
Be clear about your values, your "non-negotiable minimums". No matter how much money or fame you have ahead of you, I assure you that if you have to betray yourself to do so, that's not your path...
6- Have a more or less clear horizon, and just walk towards it
The horizon are your causes, your dreams, your deep desires. They are the ideals worth giving one's life for. Horizon helps us to walk. And that's what it's for. To walk…
7-Have as many experiences as possible now that you are young.
Only then will you get to know yourself better as a person. Volunteering, clubs, internships, camps, teams, auditions, groups, prosocial jobs, exchanges, and whatever experience you can have now that you are young, will always be a good idea.
8-In a world of infinite opportunities, commit to something.
The truth is that the possibilities are endless, but life is not enough for everything. It is enough to do many things, yes, but not all at the same time. So commit to your current decision/project (study or work), at least for a while, give things a chance, give them time.
9-Learn to embrace your reality
The future is built from the present, so try to be grateful with your life reality (even if sometimes it is difficult, I know).
10- Try to have several sources of income.
Don't bet all your income on a professional career. Look for alternative businesses, passive income, opportunities different from your future salary as a professional.
11- No path is easy
Some speakers say it very eloquently: "you can't choose the cards that Life gives you, but you can choose the game strategy that you are going to make with those cards you have". And don't forget: if they promise you easy, fast, effortless money, I can guarantee you something: that's not the way it sounds.
12-Overcome the FOMO/FOBO discourse, and learn to live with JOMO
When the FOMO (fear of missing out ), or the FOBO (fear of missing better options) arrives, respond to them with the JOMO (Joy of missing out). There is no such thing as Prince Charming of careers (neither in relationships). So if you have 75-80% "certainty" (if that exists) in something, go on with that decision. You will never be 100% sure of something, but life is about dancing with uncertainty, walking, searching, seeing the signs, filling them with meaning and continuing to walk, and above all, when you know that the decision to choose a career or change is very important, yes, but it is not decisive for the rest of your whole life, it is just the academic project in which you are about to venture today, will be temporary, and one day it will end, and other projects will come, then you can live with JOMO.
If you want to go deeper into these 12 ideas, I invite you to watch the video I leave here, where I develop them in more detail: https://youtu.be/tTiiL11itCg
